Custom ATA Cases
There's a difference between buying a case from a manufacturer and buying a case from a supplier who orders cases from a manufacturer. Most buyers find out about that difference the hard way — when a foam pattern can't be reproduced, when a reorder doesn't match the original, when a question about hardware specs takes three weeks to route through a supply chain. The cases that hold up across years of program reorders, the cases that ship to spec from the first prototype to the thousandth unit, are the cases that come from a manufacturer who actually makes them.
Platt Cases manufactures custom ATA cases on the Guardsman™ platform — a patented continuous industrial frame construction built from heavy-duty HMW polyethylene. Guardsman cases are tested to ATA 300, Category 1 specifications for vibration, water resistance, tumbling, and drop, and they outperform plywood ATA cases on weight, durability, crack resistance, and chemical resistance.
Custom Guardsman programs start with a proven platform and finish with the customization that fits the equipment, the program, and the brand — custom foam interiors, hardware configuration, exterior branding, and color.
Guardsman™ vs. plywood ATA: Traditional ATA flight cases use birch plywood panels and aluminum extrusion frames. Guardsman cases use HMW polyethylene sheet bent to size, locked into Platt's patented continuous industrial frame. The result is significantly better high-impact strength, lower weight per cubic foot, and superior crack and chemical resistance — without the weight and finish-degradation issues that come with plywood construction over a program's service life.
When a Custom Guardsman ATA Case Is the Right Platform
ATA cases are the right choice when a case has to survive repeated transport — trade show shipments, field deployments, freight handling, and air travel. The Guardsman platform is engineered specifically for that profile.
Repeated Transport and Freight Handling
Guardsman cases are built for cyclic stress. The continuous industrial frame absorbs handling impacts and forklift contact. The HMW polyethylene shell resists cracking under repeated drops and edge loads. The recessed spring-loaded handles and recessed hardware stay flush with the case body — out of the way of straps, dollies, and freight equipment. Programs that ship the same case to the same locations on a regular schedule get more value from Guardsman construction than from any catalog ATA alternative.
Air Travel and Checked Freight
Standard Guardsman cases include a built-in TSA-accepted combination lock that allows security authorities to inspect the case without damaging it. The 1013 model is sized for airline carry-on. Larger Guardsman cases are routinely used as checked freight and field shipment cases for industrial, medical, military, and AV programs.
Guardsman ATA cases are used across industrial instrumentation, medical device deployment, electronic equipment transport, computer and AV programs, and field service kits. The platform supports equipment loads, layered foam builds, and panel-mounted hardware that other ATA constructions cannot consistently carry. To understand how this fits into our baseline framework, check our master updated Custom Products Hub or view our active Custom Case Manufacturing capabilities guidelines.
Guardsman™ Construction
The Guardsman platform is built around three structural elements: HMW polyethylene, the continuous industrial frame, and the hardware. Every element is engineered for repeatable transport, not single-trip protection.
- HMW Polyethylene Shell: High molecular weight (HMW) polyethylene thermoplastic sheets are bent to size and assembled into the case body. The material delivers high-impact strength, crack resistance under repeated drops, chemical resistance for industrial environments, and lower weight per cubic foot than plywood ATA construction.
- Patented Continuous Industrial Frame: Platt's patented Guardsman frame runs the full edge of every panel — locking the shell together, distributing impact loads, and accepting the hardware that ties the lid to the body. The continuous frame is the structural difference between Guardsman and conventional aluminum-extrusion ATA cases; impact energy is dispersed across the full frame rather than concentrated at corner extrusions.
- Heavy-duty aluminum rim and gasket: Engineered for repeatable opening and closing under field conditions.
- Full-length piano hinge: Distributes lid load across the entire back edge instead of two or three hinge points.
- Recessed spring-loaded handle: Flush with the case body when not in use; rated for the case's loaded weight.
- Recessed latches and hardware: Protected from forklift forks, freight edges, and stacking damage.
- Built-in TSA-accepted combination lock: Standard on stock Guardsman models; available on custom programs.
How a Custom Guardsman Program Gets Built
Standard Guardsman construction is the starting point. The custom program is what fits the case to the equipment list, the program volume, and the brand.
Custom Foam Interiors
Custom Guardsman cases use the same foam engineering approach as the rest of Platt's custom programs. The foam insert is where most of the protection work happens — the plastic provides the outer structure, the foam keeps the equipment from moving under shock and vibration.
- Polyethylene (PE) foam: Firm closed-cell foam — resists compression set, holds pocket geometry over time; the standard for industrial and field service programs.
- Polyurethane (PU) foam: Softer open-cell foam — higher cushioning for shock-sensitive equipment; used in precision instrument and electronics programs.
- Low-abrasion foam: Soft-surface foam for programs involving polished, painted, or finish-sensitive equipment.
- Anti-static (ESD) foam: Static-dissipative foam for programs involving PCBs, sensors, and assemblies with exposed conductors.
- Layered foam builds: Combinations engineered to the equipment profile.
Stock Guardsman cases with an "L" suffix ship lined with high-density foam. Cases with an "F" suffix ship lined and filled with solid foam layers — the buyer can configure the foam in the field, or Platt can customize the foam to a precise equipment fit. Custom foam programs may carry minimum order requirements. For more on foam material selection and the foam design process, see Custom Foam Inserts at plattcases.com/custom-foam/.
Hardware and Mobility Options
To support advanced field mobility deployment metrics, we engineer multiple expansion updates:
- Built-in wheels and telescoping handle — standard on Guardsman "HW" models, available on custom programs.
- Fixed or removable casters — for cases too large for telescoping handle programs.
- Padlockable latches and key locks — for programs requiring chain-of-custody documentation or non-TSA lock formats.
- Stacking studs — for programs that stage multiple cases together in transit or storage.
Exterior Customization and Branding
Guardsman cases ship standard in black. Safety yellow, gray, orange, and blue are also stock colors. Other custom colors are available with minimum order requirements. Branding is applied through custom aluminum nameplates mounted to the case exterior — durable, refinishable, and survivable through the program lifecycle. Logo, model identification, asset tagging, and customer-specific marking are all standard options.
Jetalum™ All-Aluminum Construction: For programs that require all-aluminum construction — high-end AV deployments, programs with electrical shielding or thermal considerations, or buyer-specified aluminum builds — the Guardsman platform is also available as a Jetalum™ all-aluminum case. Jetalum uses the same continuous-frame engineering principles as Guardsman, built from aluminum sheet instead of HMW polyethylene.
Stock Guardsman™ Sizes
Programs requiring a non-standard footprint are quoted as fully custom Guardsman cases — all program sizes are available, in quantities as few as one case.

How a Custom Guardsman Program Works at Platt Cases
We move your custom enterprise requirements safely from basic measurements to scaled regional drop shipments using six distinct stages:
Size and platform selection
Guardsman case sized to the equipment list.Foam interior design
Interior layout designed to the equipment list; foam type and density specified; pocket geometry reviewed against the case interior.Hardware and branding spec
Wheels and handle, lock format, color, and nameplate artwork confirmed; minimum order quantities reviewed for custom color and custom foam.Sample validation
First-cut foam validated against actual equipment; case with hardware confirmed against buyer requirements before production quantities are committed.Production
Production cases assembled; foam installed; hardware applied; nameplates fitted; finished cases packed and shipped.Reorder support
Approved foam layout, hardware spec, and nameplate files archived for reorder; replacement cases, replacement foam, and replacement parts can be produced without re-engineering.Program timelines: Custom Guardsman programs typically run 3–6 weeks from approved specification to first shipment, depending on foam complexity, custom color requirements, and program volume. Fully custom Guardsman sizes outside the stock footprint may extend timelines for first-article production.
